Muck Rack Tips and Tricks

Muck Rack is a platform designed for public relations and communication professionals. It has several tools to discover and connect with journalists, bloggers, reporters, and other media influencers. You can search media databases, track coverage, and create and share media lists. Muck Rack aims to create a bridge between public relations and communications professionals and journalists covering subjects relating to our clients’ work.

I briefly recall creating a Muck Rack account in one of my classes for an assignment about exploring the platform. However, I only really used the platform once I started my internship. With your Temple email, you can create an account for the platform for free! If you ever have the opportunity or need to, take advantage before you graduate because Muck Rack can be a bit pricey.

I was intimidated when I started using the platform, but it is pretty easy to use, and I learned a lot. Here are some tips and tricks to help your search for journalists.

When searching for a journalist to pitch an idea, you want to research them and who they work for so you know their brand aligns with your topic. If your client is promoting a new clothing line, search ‘fashion’ in the search bar across media outlets. You can type their name in the people tab if you are looking for a specific person. If you are looking for a particular article, you can type that in the article section of the search bar.

When you have found the journalist you feel is a good fit for the story, you can pitch them on Muck Rack. Sometimes, the journalists have their email there if you prefer to pitch them through your email. Journalists will have their names available, the topics they report on, and the companies/news outlets they work for.

There are many ways to filter your searches on Muck Rack. You can filter people by verified and unverified. You can search scopes by local, national, digital, international, and more, as well as country, state, or city. You can search outlets by newspapers, magazines, podcasts, and more.

Muck Rack provides resources for public relations and communication professionals to connect with specific journals for our stories and clients. Hopefully, these tips will help you!
